Julian E. Zelizer - Burning Down the House: Newt Gingrich, the Fall of a Speaker, and the Rise of the New Republican Party—in conversation with Evan Thomas

CNN’s political analyst and winner of the D.B. Hardeman Prize for Best Book on Congress with The Fierce Urgency of Now, Zelizer draws on his extensive experience to trace today’s rancorous partisanship back to one man: Newt Gingrich. Elected to Congress in 1978, Gingrich set the tone for the future with relentless attacks against political opponents, including the charges of ethics violations that led to the resignation of House Speaker James Wright. As he steadily consolidated power, Gingrich also redesigned the Republican Party in his own image, proving the enduring value of his brazen strategy by leading the GOP to regain control of the House in 1994 for the first time in forty years. Zelizer will be in conversation with Evan Thomas, author, most recently, of First: Sandra Day O'Connor.
