Daniel Markovits - The Meritocracy Trap: How America's Foundational Myth Feeds Inequality, Dismantles the Middle Class, and Devours the Elite

In his deeply researched, passionately argued, and nonpartisan book, Markovits, Guido Calabresi Professor of Law at Yale Law School and founding director of the Center for the Study of Private Law, blames the country’s current crises on an unusual suspect: the abiding faith in meritocracy. Once tantamount to the American Dream, meritocracy now is more of an anachronistic fantasy. It has manifestly failed both the working class and the increasingly frustrated middle class, and Markovits shows that elites, too, are straining to keep up. Debunking what has become a fraudulent system, Markovits outlines how we can move forward to find new ways of conferring dignity and prosperity on all citizens.
