Basketball to Uplift the Youth's 1st Annual Bigger than Basketball Gala

Basketball to Uplift the Youth's 1st Annual Bigger than Basketball Gala will be held on Thursday, September 12, 2019 at The City Club of Washington. The gala will serve as a fundraiser to allow Basketball to Uplift the Youth to raise the necessary funds to carry out its work in Haiti. The gala's Keynote Speaker will be former U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan. In January 2019, Duncan visited Basketball to Uplift the Youth's site in Cité Soleil, Haiti to experience first-hand the transformative work being done by the organization in that community. Duncan had such an amazing experience and was so impressed by Basketball to Uplift the Youth's work that he has since become one of the organization's top supporters. The Attorney General of the District of Columbia, Karl Racine, will also be a speaker at the gala. Racine is the first independently elected Attorney General of the District of Columbia, a position he has held since January 2015. In addition to this role, Racine serves as vice president of the bi-partisan National Association of Attorneys General and as co-chair of the Democratic Attorneys General Association.  Born in Haiti, Attorney General Racine came to Washington, DC at the age of three. He earned a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was captain of the basketball team, and a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law. While in private practice, Racine was elected managing partner of his firm, Venable LLP, and became the first African-American managing partner of a top-100 American law firm. Outside of his official role, Attorney General Racine remains involved with a variety of causes, including youth literacy and mentoring. In addition, former Prime Minister of Haiti Michèle Pierre-Louis wil speak at the gala. Pierre-Louis has led the country’s Fondasyon Konesans ak Libète (Knowledge and Freedom Foundation) since 1995. Universally recognized in Haiti by the acronym FOKAL, the foundation is a local affiliate of the Open Society Foundations and it focuses on the areas of education, culture, community development, environment, gender equity, civil society, and training of young entrepreneurs. Pierre-Louis holds an MA in Economics (cum laude) from Queens College of the City University of New York, and honorary degrees in the humanities from Saint Michael College in Vermont, and the University of San Francisco. From September through December 2010, she was a resident fellow at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. In November 2014, UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon appointed her to a high-level panel on technology for the least developed countries. The 2019 Bigger than Basketball Gala will be held at The City Club of Washington. Founded in 1987, the City Club is located in the heart of Washington, DC’s prominent legal, business and theater district just three blocks from the White House. One of the region’s premier social and business clubs, the City Club offers guests a warm and sophisticated environment to dine and socialize in subtle elegance. Guests will be treated to a cocktail reception from 6:30 to 7:30, and a full-course dinner will be served during the main event. Dress code: Black tie optional We hope that you'll be able to join Duncan, Racine, and other distinguished guests to support Basketball to Uplift the Youth's work in Haiti!
