      2019 Professional Women in Advocacy Summer Workshop

      PWIA Summer Workshop, Since 2013 Professional Women in Advocacy has been bringing professional development programming to women working in government relations, public affairs, advocacy, political and civic engagement and activism. We are plesed to host our first workshop for young women this summer in cooperation with Montgomery College and Val Enterprises. Draft Agenda 9:00am              Registration and breakfast - Come early and network with friends and colleagues 9:30am              Welcome and opening remarks: Speakers: LeeAnn Petersen to introduce Valarie Davis, VEnterprises; Valarie to introduce Kimberly Herrera, Montgomery College 9:45am             Civic Engagement 101 - How the government works and the role of the citizen in shaping policy. 11:00am           Elements of an Advocacy Campaign – So you want to make societal change – where do you start? What tools and techniques will you employ? This is a step by step guide to a successful advocacy campaign. 12:00pm            Bio break 12:15pm            Keynote Luncheon – Panel discussion on getting more women and people of color into the pipeline to public service and advocacy. 1:30pm              Are you the beginning of a movement? – Whether you want to be an advocate in your personal time or have a career representing a cause you are passionate about, here are some steps you can take. 2:30pm             Dolphin Tank – Break out into groups sorted by issue area (i.e. gun violence, animal welfare, women’s equality etc.) and develop your message, how it will be delivered and expected or desired outcome. 3:30pm             Bio break and cookie clatch 3:45pm             Been there Done that – Young Advocates of Distinction – PWIA always concludes the day with BTDT which is a panel discussion of successful people in our field who share their story and give advice to participants.
