      Amy Bloom - White Houses

Bloom’s fourth novel is told from the point of view of Lorena Hickok and recounts her long relationship with Eleanor Roosevelt. Starting with Hickok’s unhappy childhood in Wisconsin, the narrative follows her escape from an abusive home, her struggle to finish school, and the job at the Minneapolis Tribune that turned her life around. By 1932, Hickok worked for the AP and was one of the country’s most prominent women journalists. She met Eleanor Roosevelt while covering FDR’s first presidential campaign and the two women soon became close. Bloom’s narrative, told with the mastery of period detail and skilled character development she used to powerful effect in Away and Lucky Us, gives us not just a historical novel, but an intimate glimpse of one of recent history’s most intriguing relationships.
